BGR has reportedly received information from an inside source that Jay-Z and Apple are teaming up to launch a record label. As you might recall, a similar rumor surfaced last summer but was never confirmed. Could this be Deja Vu? Jay-Z recently stepped down as CEO of Def Jam, which does give him time to pursue other business ventures. In addition, Jay was quoted as saying negotiations with Universal Music Group (to return as Def Jam CEO) were stalled because he was interested in developing a new blueprint for music distribution. Unfortunately, it looks like Universal did not agree with his vision.
For Jay, a partnership with Apple would represent an excellent opportunity to develop a new business model for distributing music, considering the popularity of Itunes. Nevertheless, we will have to wait and see how true this rumor turns out to be. Fool me once…shame on you.
Any deal between Jay and Apple will more than likely be a new type of digital distribution deal. Jay has no reason to start another record label when all his acts are signed to Rocafella.
